Answers with Explanation

1. (b) India

India is the second highest sender of foreign students in the US, next only to China. The US consul general Craig Hall said this at a programme in Kolkata on June 10, 2018. He said that the United States is the top destination for foreign students worldwide and the number of Indian students in the US has more than doubled in the last 10 years.

2. (c) Northern Railways

Northern Railways will now monitor cleanliness of its trains using WhatsApp groups supervised by senior officials. Northern Railway General Manager Vishwesh Chaube said in New Delhi, that every department, be it pantry, bed rolls will have separate WhatsApp groups, in which status report of cleanliness will be uploaded on a daily basis.

3. (a) Arvind Saxena

Arvind Saxena has been appointed to serve as the acting Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) from June 20, 2018. Saxena, a former RAW officer, would be succeeding incumbent Vinay Mittal who completes his term on June 19.

The 44th summit of the Group of Seven was held in La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada from June 8-9, 2018. The summit was overshadowed by differences over trade tariff disputes and calls to readmit Russia. Trump's ‘America first’ policy led to policy decisions that angered even the closest of US allies.

The 44th summit of the Group of Seven (G7), which was held from June 8–9, 2018 in La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, ended in complete disarray with US President Donald Trump blasting off host Canada and abruptly retracting his support for a joint statement, signed by every nation in the group.

India will soon have its first national police museum in New Delhi. The museum - depicting the history, artefacts, uniforms and gear of central and state police forces - will come up as an underground facility in the premises of the national police memorial in Chanakyapuri area of the national capital.

India was ranked 136th among 163 countries in Global Peace Index 2018 due to a reduction in the level of violent crime driven by increased law enforcement. The Index is prepared by Sydney-based international think-tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

8. (b) China

The 18th edition of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit was held in Qingdao, China on June 9-10, 2018. The summit concluded with the adoption of the Qingdao declaration. The declaration calls for implementing the three-year plan to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism.

9. (c) China

India and China signed an agreement under which China has agreed to import non-Basmati rice from India. This MoU was signed between China's General Administration of Customs and India's Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare on Phytosanitary requirements for exporting rice from India to China.

10. (d) Sunil Mehta committee

The Union finance ministry constituted a committee to examine the possibility of setting up an Asset Reconstruction Company (ARC) or an Asset Management Company (AMC) to fast track resolution of stressed assets. Punjab National Bank’s non executive chairman Sunil Mehta will head the panel.

11. (a) Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean

The World Oceans Day was observed on June 8, 2018 to provide an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources. The 2018 conservation action theme was “Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean”.

12. (b) Gujarat

A landfill site in Gujarat’s Vadodara was converted into a tree museum. The municipal corporation planted over 12000 saplings of nearly 100 varieties in an area of 50000 square metres.
