Answers with Explanation
1. (a) Delhi
The Delhi high court on July 17, 2018 ruled that marriage does not mean woman’s consent to sexual relation with her husband. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said that in a relationship like marriage, both man and woman have a right to say ‘no’ to physical relations.
2. (b) Assam
President Ram Nath on July 17, 2018 approved the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015, thus, converting it to an Act. The Bill was unanimously passed by the Assam assembly in 2015.
3. (a) IIT Madras
On July 16, 2018, IIT-Madras launched the world’s first remotely operable LEAP (Local Electrode Atom Probe (LEAP) microscope. LEAP is high-performance microscope that can provide a precise atom-by-atom view of materials.
4. (b) 300
China on July 16, 2018 announced its plans to launch 300 low-orbit satellites to provide worldwide communication services. This 300-satellite array is named as the ‘Hongyan Constellation’. Hongyan stands for 'wild goose'; in ancient China, geese were used to deliver messages.
5. (c) Peru
Peru has declared a 60-day state of emergency on its border with Colombia in order to guarantee security in a region rife with drug trafficking. There are security problems created by Colombian citizens crossing the border and there was a need to reestablish the state's presence.
6. (d) BBC
The BBC World Service launched its first Gujarati language television news bulletin as part of an ongoing expansion drive in India. BBC Samachar will broadcast live five days a week from Delhi and will air on the broadcaster’s partner station GSTV at 8 pm local time.
7. (b) Uttarakhand
The Uttarakhand government on July 17, 2018 banned angling, a method of catching fish using a rod, line and baited hook, in its forest areas and buffer zones of tiger reserves. The order was issued by Head of Forest Force Jai Raj under different sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act , 1960. The order comes into immediate effect.
8. (a) Neeraj Chopra
India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal at the Sotteville Athletics meet in France on July 17, 2018. Chopra with a throw of 85.17m was way ahead of his competitors, including Moldova's Andrian Mardare (81.48m) and Lithuania's Edis Matusevicius (79.31m), who took the silver and bronze medal respectively.
9. (b) Muscat
The eighth session of India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) was held in Muscat, Oman on July 16, 2018. The session was co-chaired by the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu along with the Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy of Oman, Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy.
10. (d) Assam
Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 17, 2018 announced the appointment of Indian ace sprinter Hima Das as the sports ambassador of Assam. Das, who created history by winning gold at IAAF World Under-20 Championships at Tampere in Finland recently, would be the first sports ambassador of the state.
11. (c) RBI
In order to address the concerns arising out of the anonymity and to prevent money laundering, the Reserve Bank has now made it compulsory to incorporate the purchaser’s name on the face of demand draft, pay order, banker’s cheques and other instruments.
12. (d) Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir government has abolished interviews for all Class-IV posts in the state and the selection will now be based on the merit secured in the written examination. The decision will come into effect immediately except for those posts for which selection process has already been initiated.
