1. (a) New Delhi
Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan has unveiled a state-of-the-art Air Quality and Weather Forecast System– SAFAR in New Delhi. First of its kind in the country, the system was developed indigenously in record time by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. The new system will accelerate public awareness and preparedness of air pollution and weather extremes.

2. (c) Sunil Chhetri
Indian national football team’s captain Sunil Chhetri was named as the 2017 All India Football Federation (AIFF) Player of the Year by the national body in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Chhetri recently became the second Indian footballer to play 100 international games after Bhaichung Bhutia. While he was declared the 2017 AIFF Player of the Year in the men's category, Kamala Devi was adjudged the 2017 AIFF woman Player of the Year.

3. (b) Sri Lanka
India-assisted emergency ambulance service was launched in Sri Lanka by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing from New Delhi on July 21, 2018. The service was earlier introduced in two provinces of Sri Lanka with grant assistance from India and it will now be expanded to the remaining seven provinces.

Top beverage companies including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Bisleri, have initiated a buyback programme for all PET bottles sold in Maharashtra. Under the programme, a predefined buyback price will have to be mandatorily printed on the larger PET/PETE bottles.

The no-confidence motion was moved by Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a former NDA ally.  The parties that supported the motion included Congress, CPI, CPI (M), TMC and AAP. After a marathon 12-hour debate, the no-confidence was rejected by the majority of the house with 325 votes against and 126 in favour with 451 members of the parliament present and voting.

German footballer Mesut Ozil, who has Turkish roots, announced his decision to quit the German national football team on July 22, 2018. His quit citing racism as the main reason, as his decision to pose for a photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had sparked questions about his loyalty to the German quad ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

7. (a) IIT Kanpur
The IIT Kanpur developed an online tool “TreadWill” to help people cope with issues related to mental health. The tool has been developed by a team with collaborative support from the Computer Science and Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences, HSS (Psychology) departments.

8. (b) Australia
Australia announced plans to explore concepts such as firing salt into clouds and covering swathes of water with a thin layer of film in a bid to save the embattled Great Barrier Reef. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed reef, about the size of Japan or Italy, is reeling from two straight years of bleaching.

9. (c) Nepal
The 4th BIMSTEC Summit 2018 will be held in Kathmandu from August 30 to 31, 2018. The main focus of the summit will be to increase connectivity between the BIMSTEC nations including roads, airways and transmission lines.

10. (d) Chhattisgarh
The Chhattisgarh government has launched an online portal and mobile app ‘Aabhaar-Aapki seva ka (Gratitude-For Your Service)’ to provide transparency in the pension facility.
