1. (a) Vinay Sheel Oberoi committee
The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on April 4, 2018 constituted a High Powered Committee to examine the entire system of conducting Class X and Class XII examinations, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Vinay Sheel Oberoi, retired Secretary  of Higher Education, MHRD, will be the Chairperson of the 7 member High Power Committee.

2. (b) Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru
Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar on April 3, 2018 released the NIRF India Rankings 2018 in various categories on the basis of performance of higher educational institutions. The Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru topped the list of Overall Rankings followed by IIT Madras at 2nd position, IIT Bombay at 3rd, IIT Delhi at 4th and IIT Kharagpur at fifth position.

Rosemary DiCarlo, the US diplomat, was appointed as the head of UN political affairs, one of the most high-profile positions at the United Nations (UN). With this, DiCarlo has become the first woman to head this position. She succeeded Jeffrey Feltman.

India was ranked 37th out of 125 countries in global startup ecosystem in 2017, according to latest report released by global startup ecosystem map Startupblink. The Startupblink is a global startup ecosystem map with tens of thousands of registered startups, coworking spaces, and accelerators.

Indonesian government declared an emergency around a Balikpapan port on Borneo Island after a large oil spill and fire. Balikpapan is a major mining and energy hub and home to one of the few oil refineries in the country.

Researchers from the University College have found a new plant species called Fimbristylis agasthyamalaensis in Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats. The new species of plant belongs to the Cyperaceae family.

7. (a) Russia
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has rejected Russia's call for a joint investigation with Britain in the case of nerve-agent poisonings of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the United Kingdom.

8. (c) Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has comfortably defeated the majority vote against the no-confidence motion that was moved against him by the joint opposition. In the 225-member Parliament, 122 members voted against the motion, while 76 voted in favour.

9. (b) Afghanistan
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 4, 2018 approved the signing of a Cooperation Arrangement between Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW) and Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock (MAIL), Afghanistan for cooperation in the field of food safety and related areas.

10. (c) Iran
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 4, 2018 gave its approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Iran on the establishment of an expert group on trade remedy measures to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

11. (d) Four
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 4, 2018 gave its approval for rightsizing the Competition Commission of India (CCI) from seven members to four.  The commission would be reduced to one Chairperson and three members from earlier one Chairperson and six members.

12. (d) Turkey
The Presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran together vowed to secure the territorial integrity of Syria during the trilateral summit in Ankara. The trilateral summit brought together two of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's most ardent supporters, Russia and Iran and one of his strongest opponents Turkey.
