TRAI Recommended Cancellation of 38 2G Licenses
TRAI recommended 38 licenses given to companies for the 2G spectrum should be cancelled.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on 18 November 2010 wrote to the Department of Telecom (DoT) recommending immediate cancellation of 38 of the 2G licences awarded in 2008 and legal scrutiny of another 31. TRAI recommended the cancellation on the ground of non-compliance of terms and conditions of the licence which is taken as a failure to meet the rollout obligations. New licensees like Uninor, Loop, Sistema Shyam, Videocon and Etisalat, who bagged the controversial 2G licences are likely to be hit in case the Indian government accepts the recommendation. TRAI’s recommendation follows CAG’s report on 2G scam where the the irregularities in the award of 85 licences along with spectrum that cost the exchequer Rs 1.76 lakh crore was highlighted.
