Union Water Resource Ministry launched nationwide tree plantation drive

Union Water Resources Minister, Uma Bharti on 17 June 2014 launched a nationwide tree plantation drive and public awareness programme to save rivers.

Uma Bharti also planted saplings on the banks of river Yamuna at Delhi in memory of victims of Kedarnath (Uttarakhand) tragedy that occurred in June 2013.  Similar functions were also held at Gangotri, Haridwar, Kanpur, Varanashi, Allahabad, Patna, Nabadweep and Ganga Sagar.

Apart from this, the Central Water Commission was directed to provide warnings to the concerned states about the increase in water level in lakes of more than 50 hectares in size, which are located at high altitude. Meanwhile, under Flood Management Plan in cooperation with the ministries of environment and tourism, the Water Resources Ministry will also repair the embankments of rivers that were damaged during the Uttarakhand flood tragedy.
