Scientists at Western Kentucky University, US genetically engineered Tulasi or basil to enhance its pharmaceutical value.

image Scientists genetically engineered Tulsai to produce eugenol, a compound found in basil. Eugenol has a pharmaceutical value which controls the breast cancer. Tulasi is a medicinal plant and has anti-cancerous compounds called metabolites.

• Tulasi is scientifically called Ocimum tenuiflorum or Ocimum sanctum.
• Tulasi leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine and it is known to promote the longevity of life.
• The herb Tulasi is used to cure the respiratory disorders and to combat cardiac disorders.
