Veteran Tamil director RC Sakthi passed away

Popular Tamil director R.C. Sakthi passed away on 23 February 2015 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu following a brief illness. He was 76. Sakthi is survived by two daughters and a son.

He was mentor of the famous actor Kamal Haasan and had launched him as lead role in his Tamil directorial debut Unarchigal in 1972.

Sakthi started his career as an assistant to theatre artist Subbhu Arumugam and worked with him on several plays. In 1970, he joined the Tamil film Annai Velankani as an assistant director.

• Born in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, Sakthi started his career in film industry as a theatre artist and later shifted to cinema.
• He began his directorial career as an assistant director for the Tamil film Porsilai (1969) and Annai Velankanni (1970). In his two decade long career, he had directed 17 films.
• In 1972, Sakthi launched Kamal Haasan in his directorial debut Unarchigal. It was released in 1976.
• Some of his critically acclaimed films are Manidharil Ithanai Nirangala (1978), Dharma Yuddham (1979) which starred Rajinikanth and Amma Pillai (1990).
• His last directed Tamil film Pathini Penna (1993) was awarded with two Tamil Nadu state awards- Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film and State award for Best Dialogue Writer.
