World Economic Forum (WEF) released 13th Edition of the Global Information Technology Report 2014 on 14 April 2014 in New York. India was ranked 83 among 148 economies in terms of leveraging information and communications technologies for growth and well being.
According to the Report, little progress been made in bridging the gap between the most networked economies of world and the rest of the world. Many large emerging economies continue to struggle to realise their full digital potential and feature lower down the index, while developed economies feature on the top.
Besides, the constant digital divide across the economies, government should also be wary of understanding, identifying and addressing potential internal digital divides so that new opportunities can be created for all and support enhanced social inclusion.
The top ten ranks in the list are Finland (rank 1); Singapore (rank 2); Sweden (rank 3); Netherlands (rank 4th); Norway (rank 5th); Switzerland (rank 6th); United States (rank 7th); Hong Kong SAR (rank 8th); United Kingdom (rank 9th); Republic of Korea (rank 10th)
Among emerging market economies, China was ranked 62nd position, Brazil (69th), Mexico (79th) and India (83rd). India is the least performing of the BRICS economies and slipped from rank 68th (out of 144 economies) to the 83rd rank.
Other economies are Sri Lanka (rank 69), Bangladesh (rank 114), Nepal (rank 126) and Pakistan (rank 105).
The drop in rankings of India can be traced back mainly to difficulties in improving historical limitations and keeping up with other emerging in several dimensions. The quality of political, regulatory, business environment and lack of digital infrastructure are different issues hindered the network readiness profile of India.
