10 November: World Science Day for Peace and Development
The World Science Day for Peace and Development was observed across the world on 10 November 2017 with the theme ' Science for Global Understanding'.
The day highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.
Main objectives of World Science Day for Peace and Development
• Strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies;
• Promote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries;
• Renew national and international commitment for the use of science for the benefit of societies;
• Draw attention to the challenges faced by science and raising support for the scientific endeavour.
The World Science Day for Peace and Development was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference through its Resolution 31C/ 20 in 2001. The Day is celebrated all over the world to consider the commitment made at the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science (Budapest 1999).
The Day aims to renew the national and international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society.
