Eligibility Criteria for UPSC (IAS) 2020

UPSC has started the registration process of IAS Prelims Exam 2020. The registration window is open from 12th February 2020 to 3rd March, 2020. Check the eligibility criteria to apply for this exam.

UPSC treats all the IAS aspirants at par irrespective of their age, educational qualification, gender, and the likes. There is no minimum passing percentage required in the graduate degree in order to apply for the IAS Exam. All the IAS aspirants whether a graduate or a Doctorate needs to appear in the common IAS Prelims Exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission each year.

IAS Exam is the premier exam of India and also the toughest one. IAS is the best All India Service to serve the society. The UPSC conducts the civil services exam each year for the All India services and various central civil services. If you are planning to appear for the Civil Sevice Exam you should know the exact eligibility criteria for the IAS Exam.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: Age Limit & Attempts

Candidate must have attained a minimum age of 21 years to appear for the Civil Service Examination. The separate maximum age limit has been set for different reservation categories: 32 years for general category, 35 years for OBC and 37 years for SC and ST. There is extra relaxation in the disabled category.

In addition to the pre-existing reservation categories, the Union Public Services Commission added a new category of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in 2019 to provide reservation to the EWS candidates as mandated by the Government of India. The eligibility conditions for the EWS candidates have not been changed and are aligned with the general candidates' eligibility conditions.

Age will be calculated from the date - 1st of August of the Notification year.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: Reservation for EWS

The recent decision of Govt of India to provide reservation to the Economically weaker Section of the society is also incorporated in the UPSC Civil Services Exam notification. The number of the EWS reserved seats will be around 10% of the total no. of vacancies. The final numbers of vacancies and the reserved seats will be published in the results.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: No Attempt relaxation for EWS Category

There is no relaxation provided to the candidates belonging to the EWS category. The EWS category will only have 6 attempts if they belong to the General Candidates.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: Educational Qualification

● A degree of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be a Deemed University under the UGC Act, 1956, or an equivalent qualification.

● Candidates who have appeared or intend to appear for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the Preliminary Examination however, they are supposed to submit proof of passing the requisite qualification along with Detailed Application Form for Civil Services (Main) Examination

The educational qualification required for this examination is Graduate in any discipline. There is no minimum percentage required in graduation. The only essential condition is that the graduate degree should be from a Government recognised University. The exam is so designed that the persons from different backgrounds are placed at the level playing field. There is no advantage to the candidates, who have better marks in their degree course, only the civil services exam marks matters.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: Nationality

a) The candidate must be a citizen of India to be eligible for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), for other services, a candidate must be either:

b) a citizen of India,

c) or a subject of Nepal,

d) or a subject of Bhutan,

e) or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India,

f) or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b) (c), (d), and (e) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Provided further that candidates belonging to categories (b) (c), and (d) above will not be eligible for appointment to the Indian Foreign Service.

A candidate, in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.

The citizens of Tibet's Refugee Families, Nepal, and Bhutan, along with Indian citizens, can apply in this examination, but for recruitment in IAS and IPS, the candidate must be a citizen of India. In this examination, people of Indian origin who are in different countries can also fill the form.

Eligibility Criteria for IAS 2020: Restrictions on applying for the IAS Exam A candidate who is appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or the Indian Foreign Service(IFS) on the results of an earlier examination and continues to be a member of that service will not be eligible to compete at this examination.
