Integrated Child Development Services

    ICDS stands for Integrated Child Development Services. ICDS was launched in the year 1975. It is a centrally sponsored scheme executed by the Human Resource Development Ministry. The Central Government is responsible for programme planning and operating costs while State governments are accountable for programme execution & providing additional nutrition out of their own resources.

    Integrated Child Development Services assimilate supplementary nutrition with primary health care & informal education. It is recognized as one of the largest child intervention programmes in the world with a holistic parcel of 6 basic services for children (upto 6 years of age) & for pregnant as well as nursing mothers.

    These services include:

    • Supplementary feeding (Integrated Child Development Services provide to a child food ration for a period of 300 days that contains 500 calories as well as 12 - 15 grams of protein & to lactating and pregnant women food ration having 600 calories & 18 - 20 grams protein)
    • Immunisation
    • Health check – ups
    • Referral services
    • Nutrition and health education to adult women
    • Informal pre - school education to children (3 - 6 years old)

    Integrated Child Development Service is being executed through one platform, that is, Anganwadi Centres. The staff includes the Chief Development Project Officer, Anganwadi workers, helpers as well as supervisors.
