    Fisheries contribute considerably to food, economic & employment securities, nutrition & opportunely are one of the fastest growing agricultural sub - sectors since last three decades. At present, fisheries contribute 4.6 % of the agricultural Gross Domestic Product, provide employment security to approx. 11 million people and yearly earn foreign exchange of Rs. 7,300 Crore - about 1/5th of the value of national agricultural export. A fishery may engage the capture of wild fish or elevating fish through fish farming or through aquaculture.

    Fisheries are capitulated for their worth (commercial, subsistence or recreational). They can be freshwater or saltwater, farmed or wild. Of the recent total production of 6.4 million tons of fish, marine fish production add about 3.0 million tons & inland fisheries added 3.4 million tons – 53 % of total production. While the marine fish production has been growing at 2.2 % yearly, the inland production has yearly been growing at 6.6 %, ensuing in an overall annual growth rate of 4.12 % during the 90s.
