Pope Francis I: Election to papacy

    Pope Francis is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church. The papacy of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio began on 13 March 2013. The predecessor of Pope Francis was Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis serves as the 266th Pope.  

    Pope Francis is both the leader of the Catholic Church and sovereign ruler of the Vatican City state.  He was elected on the fifth ballot of the conclave. After being elected, he bestowed the Urbi et Orbi blessing to thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square.
