World Asthma Day 2023: The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is a World Health Organization collaborative organization. It was founded in 1993. World Asthma Day is organized by GINA to spread awareness about Asthma globally. 

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease due to which a patient is not able to breathe properly. Every year the event is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to increase awareness about the chronic respiratory disease asthma, its precautions, prevention, and care around the world. Nowadays, this disease is prevalent in children also.

World Asthma Day 2023: Theme

As the majority of asthma-related illnesses and deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has designated “Asthma Care for All” as the theme for the 2023 World Asthma Day.

The theme of World Asthma Day 2022 is "Closing Gaps in Asthma Care".

The theme of World Asthma Day 2020 was "Enough Asthma Deaths". 

The theme of World Asthma Day 2019 was "STOP for Asthma." Here the theme represents symptom evaluation, test response, observation, assessment, and proceeding to adjust treatment. The Global Initiative of Health (GINA) organises checkup camps across the world to diagnose and treat asthma. Even the National Institutes of Health (NIH) also organises medical camps and provides free checkups and medicine for patients suffering from asthma.

World Asthma Day: History

In 1998, the first World Asthma Day was celebrated in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. As participation increases, the day has become the world's most important asthma awareness and education event. It aims to educate people on how to best get control of this respiratory problem and other allergic diseases.

How is World Asthma Day celebrated?

This year on May 3rd World Asthma Day is celebrated and May month is considered Asthma Awareness Month. To encourage people to take care of their asthma “National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP)” is organized. Those who are suffering from Asthma are encouraged to write the Asthma Action Plan (AAP) like what medication and facility they want to take care of asthma disease.

NAEPP’s biggest step is APP taken to bring together the doctors, patients, and others who take care of asthmatic patients to work together jointly in order to seize control over asthma.

Some activities that are performed:

  • To start with the best treatment for Asthma free check-up camps are organized.
  • In the required areas new asthma clinics and pharmacies are opened.
  • In several countries, Asthma Societies celebrate World Asthma Day on the national level.
  • Through TV channels and news channels, various awareness messages are distributed like “fighting asthma with every breath”.
  • Several schools provide classes to spread awareness about Asthma disease, its symptoms, precautions, and prevention.
  • For the awareness of public Asthma posters, and banners are distributed in many areas.

The WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development both mention asthma. The WHO's efforts to prevent and control chronic respiratory diseases are aided by the Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD). GARD is a voluntary coalition of national and international organisations and agencies from numerous nations dedicated to the ideal of a society in which everyone has access to clean air. The management of the disease as well as the main prevention of asthma depends on reducing exposure to cigarette smoke. Progress in this area is made possible by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and WHO programmes like MPOWER and mTobacco Cessation.
