As population of elder people and logetivity is increasing, abuse of elder people is also becoming a serious problem these days. It not only affects health, human rights of elders but also cause death. So, it is important to raise awareness about preventing it whenever and wherever it is necessary.

What is Elder abuse?
In the whole world we can see abuse of elder and it is a very common problem that elder faces in their lives. Elder abuse can be seen in many forms like physical, emotional, sexual, financial and neglection also. How can we forget that elders are also human, they also deserve dignity and respect as other people in other age groups wants? Elders are also like parents and are parents of someone. Because of them we came into the world and when they need us, we left them. We have to understand the main reason and cause of the problem and sort it out rather than leaving elders.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2019: History

This day was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) by passing UN resolution 66/127. According to the UN, around 1in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. It is predicted to rise as populations age worldwide. No doubt elder abuse may lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. It is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world.

Global Day of Parent's 2019: History and Significance

Estimates indicate that the global population of people above the age of 60 will exceed the number of younger people by 2050. These changes will further lead the problems and challenges that elderly face. Research has also shown that elderly abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation are one of the biggest issues that senior citizens are facing around the world. According to World Health Organisation data, 4 to 6 percent of elderly suffer from some form of abuse and a large percent of which goes unreported. In the world population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double that is from 900 million in 2015 to about 2 billion in 2050.

This day was also launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World health organisation at the United Nations.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Objective

The main objective of this day is to provide an opportunity for communities around the globe to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by creating awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2019: Theme

The theme of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is "Lifting Up Voices". The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) and the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) invites to join in Lifting Up Voices for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2019. This theme will serve as a platform for unifying Elder Justice and Violence against Women by sharing the lived experiences of older people.

Note: The UN also observes an International Day of Older Persons on 1 October every year to recognise the contributions to older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives.

Elder Abuse: Key Facts to remember

According to UN:
- Around 1 in 6 older people face some kind of abuse, this figure is higher than previously estimated and it is predicted that it will rise as populations aged worldwide.

- Older people that are living in institutions than in the community, rates of abuse for older people are higher.

- The problem of elder abuse may lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences.

- As various countries are experiences rapidly ageing populations, so problem of elder abuse is predicted to increase.

- The global population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double, from 900 million in 2015 to about 2 billion in 2050.

So, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2019 is observed on 15 June every year to raise awareness about the problems that elder people faces and elder abuse may lead to serious physical injuries, mental trauma, and psychological consequences. We all should think and respect our elders that they are also a part of the society, in fact because of them we came to the world. We should not neglect them, after all they also have right to live with dignity and it is our duty to fulfil their needs and provide support whenever and wherever they required.
