Founded in 1949, Ranchi Women college has carved out a niche for itself in the world of higher eduction for women in social science / humanities, sciences and commerce. Emerging as a torch bearer in the field of Women Eduction. Ranchi Women''s college has grown to a center of excellence in the domain of higher education for women of Jharkhand, Bihar,West Bengal and Orissa. Beginning with 11 students and 03 teachers, the visionary founder Principal Mrs. Bhanumati Prasad nurtured a seedling that has become a Premiere institute today, providing a wide range of 39 programme options of quality to a large number of girls, aspiring for higher education, in the following fields-16 Honours programmes at BA level, 05 at B.Sc. level, 01 at B.Com. Level, 05 Vocational Houours at BA And B.Sc. level, 01 BA General Course, 01 B.Sc. and 01 B.Com General course, 06 MA Programmes, 02 M.Sc. Programmes and 01 B.Ed. Course. Ranchi Women''s College was initially affiliated to Patna University and then to Bihar University. Since the inception of Ranchi University in1960 it was affiliated to Ranchi University as its constituent unit. In 1968 UGC published a list of College under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 according to which there were 25 College affiliated to Ranchi University and only 04 constituent College in Ranchi University. Ranchi Women''s College was one of these four Constituent Colleges of Ranchi University. In1987 UGC transferred Ranchi Women''s College from the head "Constituent College teaching up to Bachelor''s Degree" to the head "Constituent Colleges teaching up to Post Graduate Degree" Vide memo No F8-105/86 (CPP-1) dated 3.11.87. Ranchi Women''s College is situated around 13 Acres of land with two separate Campus and play Ground. Five Hostels on the campus accommodate about 300 students of remote villages and far off places. This College aims to develop the all-round development of personality, bring out the latent qualities of the students and urge them to undertake creative activities besides academic growth. It also addresses the employment prospects of the girls to achieve equal opportunity in society. Since most of our students come from lower strata of society, the college intends to help them in shaping their inner and outer personality into confident, self-reliant, and emancipated women without any inferiority complex or hesitation. It has been innovating and introducing new courses in response to the demands of the students and the job-market . The college has attempted to keep itself updated in knowledge and skills by combining the traditional subjects in Arts and Science with vocational subjects in the emerging areas such as Biotechnology, Information technology etc. Since the traditional progrmmes in Arts, Science and Commerce have more of knowledge content and less of skill content, it is enriched through classroom discussions, seminars, tutorials, project work, networking with NGOs and lectures/workshops by experts from India and abroad. It has strength of about eleven thousand students including PG Students of 8 Subjects, BA, B.Sc., and B.Com. Honours and General students, Five Vocational subjects. B.Ed. Sudents, Students of Distance Education Study Center (Nalanda Open University Study Centre) and IA, I.Sc. & I.Com. students The Institute presently has 205 regular employees-103 Non-Teaching staffs and 102 Teaching Staffs. There are 18 Full Time Contractual Teachers and 28 part Time Guest Teaches. The Ratio of student-teacher is 75:1 There are altogether 33 Departments including UGC Sponsored "Center for Women''s Studies" established to promote research survey and extension activities for the cause of women''s emancipation. The college has formed an Inter-Disciplinary Forum (IDF) for the last three years to promote and co-ordinate academic activities and programmes with multidimensional bearings. Establishment of Placement Cell and installation of CEC-ISRO sponsored EDUSAT in an AC Studio are the rare achievements of College in the year 2004 and 2005. The Study Centre of Nalanda Open University is running since 2002 offering 05 PG Subjects and total 72 Prgoramme options at Bachelor''s level. There are several other areas, which are covered such as different dimensions of education and human values. Career awareness and counseling is offered by experts in addition to workshops on preparation of UPSC and other all India competitive examinations. The college does not limit the after-college plans and possibilities to employment alone but also inculcates a spirit of entrepreneurship and self-employment. About two-third of Ranchi University Toppers come from Ranchi Women''s College More then 500 students of BA, B.Sc. and B.Com. have been offered high rank jobs of reputed corporate and Multi-National companies of India and abroad that frequently visit college for campus interview for the last four years. True to its motto ''Tamso Ma Jyotirgtamaya'' Ranchi Women''s College has been lighting the lamp of knowledge in this tribal area. This College concentrates on Formal Education, Employment prospective of girls and their achievement of equal status in the Society.
