The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has again clinched the presidential post at Dehradun’s oldest college, DAV (PG) College for the 12th consecutive year on Sunday. The RSS-affiliated student wing defeated the opposition National Students Union of India (NSUI) candidate by a margin of around 600 votes.
Soon after winning the polls, Jitendra Singh Bisht, the newly-elected president of the students’ union said that the ABVP’s win is “emblematic of which way the wind is blowing in the state and the country.” “Students have voted for our ideology and the work that the organisation has done. They have shown trust in us because they believe in us.”
On the other hand, NSUI state president Mohan Bhandari said, “ABVP has not won a single extra seat from us. Our entire panel has been elected at MKP College and we performed better at DAV as well. Our votes have increased and we will definitely pose a challenge to them next year.”
AVBP’s Bisht secured 1,850 votes while just 1,259 students voted for NSUI’s Aaditya Bisht. After the announcement of the results, education minister Arvind Pandey congratulated the ABVP. “The party activists and union leaders have performed well across the state. I extend my wishes to them,” Pandey tweeted.
Anjali Chamoli brought some respite for the NSUI as she won the post of university representative. Chamoli got 2,578 votes for the post defeating ABVP’s Pankaj Kumar who could get only 394 votes. The post of secretary in the college has been won by Aryan group’s Shoorvir Singh Chauhan who defeated Satyam Shivam group’s Sachin Naithani. Chauhan had polled 1837 votes while 1210 students voted for Naithani.
