Allahabad University has appointed Professor RK Upadhyay of the department of Defence Studies as the Returning Officer (RO) for conducting student union election. However, the schedule of Allahabad University Students' Union (AUSU) elections for 2018-19 academic sessions has not yet been announced by the varsity. Upadhyay was appointed as the RO by the registrar on the recommendation of Vice Chancellor, Professor RL Hangloo. Confirming the development, Professor Upadhyay said that he received the letter from the registrar and would hold a meeting of stake holders of Allahabad University as well as from the constituent colleges regarding elections.
According to reports, the student's polls would be held around last week of September of and would conclude within 10 days. Last year too, the Allahabad University Students' Union were conducted around the same period. The varsity has time and again said that the elections would be conducted strictly as per the Lyngdoh Commission’s recommendation. Among various recommendations made by Lyngdoh Commission, the most important is that every student of Allahabad University will be given only opportunity to contest for the post of an office bearer and two for the post of executives.
Last year, Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) - the student wing of Samajwadi Party had swept the AUSU elections by winning four out of the five posts. It secured the post of President, Vice-President, Joint Secretary and Cultural Secretary of the Allahabad University. Whereas, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) - the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the General Secretary post.
However, the ABVP had performed exceptionally well in the 2015 and 2016 elections. It secured four out of five posts, barring the president's post, in the year 2015. Continuing its good performance, the ABVP won the post of President and Joint Secretary in 2016.
