The DDU Gorakhpur University or Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University had postponed the student union elections - scheduled to be held on September 13 - following clashes between two students groups inside the varsity premises. A heavy police force was deployed after the incident and considering the sensitivity of the matter, the University officials have decided to close the campus for two days, i.e. on September 12 and September 13. "During the meeting with the advisory committee at VC's residence, the decision was taken to postpone the varsity student union election which was scheduled for September 13. The university will remain closed on September 12 and 13", election officer Professor OP Pandey said.
It all started on Tuesday afternoon when supporters of student union president candidate Ranjeet Singh Srinet were pasting poster on the walls of Law faculty. A teacher stopped them from pasting posters on the walls of the varsity. This infuriated some of the supporters who abused and manhandled the professor. Soon after that another candidate Anil Dubey reached the spot along with his supporters. A clash ensued between both the groups.
Soon after that police reached the spot and chased the students during which some of them suffered minor injuries. A heavy police force was deployed in and around the university campus to avoid any untoward incident. "The teachers are very angry and no one is ready to work for the election in such a condition where teachers are getting threat on phone and facing misbehavior by supporters of candidates. Political parties are backing the candidates and the atmosphere has become very tense," University Teacher Association president Professor Vinod Singh said.
