Era University Lucknow has set up a Department of Happiness this academic session onwards. The department of Happiness at Era University is the first of its kind in the country.
The programme offered is a value-added course on happiness which is meant for the medical and paramedical students who work in stressful environment aiding to patients succumbing to illness and undertaking tedious medical procedures.
Vice-Chancellor of Era University, Prof Abbas Ali Mahdi said that the new department has been created with an aim to develop tools of happiness and create an ecosystem which will enable people to realize their own potential of inner well being. The programme will also help in educating medical and paramedical students on the importance of staying happy against all odds. He also claimed that university is the first in the country to run a Department of Happiness.
The Department of Happiness was established with Meeta Ghosh as the head of the department, The VC also said that after the value-added certificate course, the university also plans to introduce a full fledges course covering all the aspects. The department of happiness was formally inaugurated on August 16, 2019, by the principal secretary of medical education, Rajneesh Dube while the first class, was held on Monday, August 19, 2019.
The VC also added that it is the need of the hour to introduce a course on happiness as it is an important requirement for all the students in all disciplines especially medical students, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and those students who aim to succeed and serve the society.
The Head of Department, Prof Meeta Ghosh said that the main objective of the programme is to enable students to understand how positive psychology strategies will enable them to reach their potential as successful professionals as well as responsible good human beings.
She also added that one of the most important aims to be fulfilled by traditional schools is focussing on academic success, knowledge acquisition and also preparation of students for the professional world. She, however, pointed out that in order to build a bright future, it is required to produce happy human beings armed with all-round personalities.
The programme is experimental and will include several classroom activities such as interaction, group activities and practical homework. The course will present practical ways for using strengths, positive emotions, relationships and also help in promoting and maintaining the well being and happiness of the students. The curriculum has been designed in such a way that it will produce a future generation of happy individuals helping in serving society and focusing on positive national development.
The other educational institutions where the happiness curriculum has been set up include Yale University, Delhi Government School, and Abu Dhabi University.
