HRD Ministry declares 5 Universities as Institutions of Eminence (IoE), Know the Complete List Here

HRD Ministry has declared 5 universities as Institutions of Eminence (IoE) today, as per media reports. The Ministry of Human Resource Development on the recommendation of UCG and an expert committee, has issued orders to grant the status of Institutions of Eminence to five public universities. The institutes chosen to be declared as Institutions of Eminence include IIT Madras, Banaras Hindu University, IIT Kharagpur, University of Delhi and University of Hyderabad. Higher Education Institutes deemed as Institutions of Eminence will be provided complete autonomy and special incentives to make them world class universities.

Why Institutions of Eminence?

The HRD Ministry has launched Institutions of Eminence scheme as part of its project to develop 20 world class higher education institutions in the country. Under this scheme, government will choose 10 public and 10 private institutes to be declared as Institutions of Eminence. These institutions will be provided autonomy and special incentives to improve quality of education and to put India on the global education map.

Institutes declared as Institutions of Eminence will be given the freedom to decide their course structure, duration, free and governance structure for the operation of the institute. Additionally, public institutions selected under this scheme will be allotted Rs 1000/- crore grant to support these measures while private institutions will not be provided any funding under the scheme.

Which colleges/universities have been declared as Institutions of Eminence prior to this?

Earlier, UGC had recommended 11 higher education institutions to be declared as Institutions of Eminence out of which MHRD had only accepted six recommendations. These included the following:


Public Institutions

Private Institutions

IIT Delhi

BITS Pilani

IIT Bombay

Manipal University

IISc Bengaluru

Jio University (Yet to be Opened)


As many as 114 institutes had applied for the tag. These include 11 central universities, 27 'institutes of national importance', top IITs and NITs, 27 state universities, 10 private universities, and four greenfield institutes.
