IIT Delhi sets up School of Artificial Intelligence: As per the latest update, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has setup a School of Artificial (ScAI), which will offer PhD and PG Degrees. One of the key goals of setting up ScAI will strengthen IIT Delhi’s place on the global map of AI, says IIT Delhi Director V. Ramgopal Rao. According to the details shared by the institute, ScAI plans to start offering its own PhD program in the next admission cycle i.e. from January 2021. Apart from this, the institute also plans to launch PG programmes as well which will be offered as part of this school.

Why School of Artificial Intelligence?

Going by the details shared by Professor V Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT Delhi, the establishment of School of Artificial (ScAI) has been to achieve any of the two following goals:

  1. It will bring together over 50+ faculty members from IIT Delhi, who are currently invested in various aspects of the field. This way ScAI will act as a force multiplier and augment overall research productivity.
  2. It will enhance global visibility of IIT Delhi and place the institute on the global map of AI. With ScAI, IIT Delhi will allow focused hiring of faculty members and students to increase global visibility.

Furthermore, Prof Rao says that establishment of a dedicated school for AI will address the need for a focused approach to this futuristic discipline as “current degrees are broad-based, and do not make it easy for students to learn the depths of different subfields within AI.”

20 Core Faculty Members In ScAI

Addressing the topic of expansion and sustainability of ScAI in long run, Prof Mausam, School of AI’s Founding Head said that IIT Delhi plans to setup a dedicated faculty group that will cater to the School and offer core subject-based programmes at PG and PhD levels. In next 10 years, the institute plans to hire or develop 20 Core faculty positions as part of this school. He also added that Core faculty members will be those who consider AI, or its applications in various domain areas (e.g., healthcare, transportation), as their main research area. Core faculty members will also be responsible for developing the School and will be deeply invested in its success.”
