IIT Kharagpur has been allotted Rs 125 crores as grant under the Central Government’s SATHI initiative. Formally known as the Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institute i.e. SATHI, the scheme is a brain-child of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Central Government. The grant amount sanctioned for IIT Kharagpur under this scheme will be disbursed to the institute over three financial years commencing from 2019-20.
Why SATHI Grant?
Through the SATHI Grant Scheme, the Central Government intends to develop state-of-the-art science and technology infrastructure facilities across the country. The technological infrastructure developed under this scheme has been will be shared with the neighbouring academic institutes and research establishments and even industries and managed professionally by the parent institute. The SATHI scheme intends to help build advance technology infrastructure that can also be used by start-ups and manufacturing units to conduct research with the help of sophisticated instruments which they cannot fund themselves.
External Users to Get Priority
Furthermore, the SATHI Centre developed under the scheme will operate 24 x 7 for 365 days ensuring accessibility to all those who need to access it for research and development purposes. As per the guidelines provided by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), around 70% of the time for instrument usage has been set aside for external users from other academic institutions, national laboratories, start-ups, entrepreneurs and industry.
IIT Delhi also to setup SATHI Centre
Earlier, IIT Delhi has also been selected to develop a SATHI Centre as a shared technology infrastructure that can be used by different parties. Similar to IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi has also been allotted Rs 125 crore as mostly non-recurring grants for next 3 financial years to setup SATHI Centre. SATHI Centre of IIT Delhi will be setup at institute’s Sonepat Campus and will be home to major analytical instrument and advanced manufacturing tools, which are usually not available at institutes/organizations.
