IIT Kharagpur will get India's 1st 1.3 PetaFlop High Performance Computing facility. As per the news update, engineers from IIT Kharagpur will setup India’s first state-of-the-art 1.3 PetaFlop High-Performance Computing facility and data centre ecosystem. The initiative has been taken under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). The development of Supercomputer has been commissioned under an MoU signed by IIT Kharagpur and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an autonomous Scientific Society of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
Supercomputer to aid Research in niche areas
The development of Centre for 1.3 PetaFlop High-Performance Computing facility will aid research in niche areas like healthcare, smart cities, geoscience, new material etc among others. The supercomputer will also offer large-scale computational support to researchers who are involved in diverse areas of national importance. Commenting upon the need for development of Supercomputer, Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur said “IIT Kharagpur has selected specific challenge domains including cryptography, chemistry, molecular dynamics, drug discovery, AI & Data Sciences, etc.” The facility will accelerate the pace of research in these niche areas manifold thereby increasing the research output, capacity and efficiency.
On the occasion of signing of the MoU, Dr. Hemant Darbari, Director General, C-DAC also emphasised on the importance of high-performance computing in niche research areas such as data protection and cancer research. "The Institute will conduct degree programs such as M.Tech., PG diploma, doctoral programs as well microspecializations for undergraduate students and short-term courses for industry professionals and students outside IIT Kharagpur," added Prof. Chakrabarti.
The supercomputer facility as part of the research infrastructure at IIT Kharagpur is being developed keeping in mind strategic and national importance research done by the institute. As per tentative estimates, the supercomputer facility is expected to be ready in the next 3-4 months. All products, accessories and computational components will be developed indigenously. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology as well as Department of Science and Technology are closely working the institute for setting up on the supercomputer facility. After completion, the supercomputer facility will aid research projects for multiple governmental agencies including NITI Aayog, MHRD, DRDO, IISc, IITs and many more.
