The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is conducting summer internship programmes in the online mode. According to reports approximately 15, 000 online applications have been submitted until now and close to 65 interns have joined the internship programme offered by the institute. SPARK Internship Programme
The SPARK internship programme has been introduced to provide research exposure to the best undergraduate students across the country. Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee said that the SPARK Team has quickly adapted to the reality of the COVID-19 lockdown and offer internship programmes online since most of the summer internship programmes at the institutions have been cancelled across the country due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Students for the internship
The majority of the students selected for the internship programme will be from IITs and NITs across the country. The interns selected will be paid Rs. 2500 each week as the fellowship and the work will be done for the 17 participating departments of the institute performing theoretical and computational research in areas of science, engineering, management and social sciences.
Contribution towards COVID-19 relief
A professor from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee has developed a software which will detect COVID-19 within a record time of 5 seconds. The software developed uses X-Ray as a measure for scanning the suspected patient. The software took over 40 days to be developed and has also been filed for patent.
With the COVID-19 lockdown first introduced in March, the academic schedule for a lot of institutions have been postponed or institutions have had to consider alternative measures to get the same done. Conducting internships and examinations in the online mode are some of the measures that institutions have taken in order to make sure that the academic activities are continued despite the lockdown.
