Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar will be conducting its 8th convocation ceremony today. The convocation ceremony for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of IIT Ropar will be conducted at S Radhakrishnan Block, Main Campus, IIT Ropar.
The chief guest for the ceremony is former ISRO chairman A. S Kiran Kumar who will also be delivering the convocation address. While at the post of ISRO chairman, A.S Kiran Kumar made notable contributions to the design and development of Electro-Optical Imaging Sensors for Airborne, Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary Orbit Satellites starting from Bhaskara TV payload to the Mars Orbiter Mission payloads.

About IIT Ropar
IIT Ropar has made rapid progress towards creating a remarkable and unique campus by starting in 2008 with 500 acres of land in Rupnagar, Punjab. The institution has a state of the art infrastructure in a 1.37 lakh sq.mt consisting of housing facilities for 2100 students, 162 faculty members and 83 staff members with a magnificent entrance, innovative laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, space for other extracurricular and co-curricular activities and hostels with large common spaces.
IIT Ropar has close to 2005 students from which 1053 are undergraduate students while 437 are postgraduate students and 515 Ph.D. students. In the last five years as per data, from 2015-16 to 2019-20 the intake of students has increased from 124 to 346 for the B.Tech programme while the intake for the M.Sc and M.Tech programme has increased to 230 from 43. The intake for Ph.D. programmes has increased to 140 from 53 due to which the strength of the students has increased from 546 in 2015-16 to 2005 in 2019-20.
The institutions this academic year introduced new B.Tech programmes in Mathematics and Computing. The institution is offering a new option for the students of the B.Tech [rogramme wherein the student can opt for converting their B.Tech programme into B.Tech-M.Tech (Dual Degree) programme.
The institution has also seen an increase in the number of female students admitted to the B.Tech programme. Compared to the number in 2-15-16 where 6 girls were admitted to the engineering programme 57 were admitted in 2019-20 which is 10 times the number in the previous year.
