IITian para shuttler Nitesh Kumar is all set to represent India at Para Asian Games 2018 to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The final-year Electrical Engineering student at IIT Mandi has represented India at various international tournaments and he recently got selected in MD SL3-SL4 category for Para Asian Games. Kumar, who hails from Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, met with an accident at Visakhapatnam in the year 2009. He received serious injuries in his leg and was left bed-ridden for several months. Kumar, who once represented his school in football at the National level competition, started concentrating on his studies after the accident

In 2013, he went to IIT Roorkee for a preparatory course and during this time he developed an interest in the game. "There was a badminton hall close to our rooms where I would sit for hours watching the students play. I became interested in the sport and slowly began pursuing it," Kumar was quoted as saying in a report by TOI. Later he took admission in IIT-Mandi to pursue B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering and thanks to his practice at IIT-Roorkee, he got selected for the NSO program. NSO is a sports course for first-year students of the institute where they can represent their IITs during any event or fest.

After two years of practice, Kumar participated in his first para tournament - All India Nationals 2016. Since then, the 23-year-old IITian - who currently holds up National Rank 3 and World Rank 8, has represented India at Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2016, Ireland Para-Badminton International 2017 and Thailand Para-Badminton Championship 2018. He thanked all his sponsor -Netmeds, IIT Mandi, Soch Foundation, Himachal and Madhusudan Marbles - for the support which helped him give his best in the events he participated this year. Kumar wants to prepare for doubles game but unable to practice with co-players because of lack of organised practice routine for para players. Currently Kumar  is training with his team at Lucknow under the guidance of national para badminton coach Gaurav Khanna.
