PUSU Demands Fee Waiver: Going by the latest update, the Presidency University Students’ Union has sought waiver of Semester Fee for all students due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. In a mail sent to the university administration, the PUSU said that the fee for the current semester and the end semester examination be completely waived for all the students. The demand comes amid rising concerns among students about the financial stress due to the pandemic and the lockdown measures implemented by the authorities.

Refund Fees Paid in Previous Semester

The request to seek Semester Fee Waiver for students was filed by PUSU in the form of a letter signed by PUSU president Mimosa Ghorai and three other office-bearers. Currently, the Presidency University Students’ Union is currently controlled by SFI – Students’ Federation of India. Along with seeking waiver of semester fee for upcoming period, the students’ union has also asked the varsity to refund fees paid by the students in their previous semester as soon as possible. This will aid the students financially.

In the letter, PUSU President Ghorai said that "In the Covid situation, every student is faced with multiple personal issues. One student out of every five is getting infected and many students come from economically backward families and face various hardships ... If any family member of a student gets infected the entire saving of the family is used for the treatment and the cost is huge after which nothing is left for the students to pay fees.”

Furthermore, the union also recounted that the semester fees being charged by the varsity also includes lab fee, basic service fee, library fee, which are services that students’ are currently unable to use or avail due to the pandemic. The union has asked varsity authorities to address the issue at the earliest to provide immediate relief to students.

In addition to this, the students’ union has also demanded that the results of the final semester be published at the right time so that no one has to face any problem during the subsequent application in any higher educational institution in the country or abroad.
