The University Grants Commission will allow 900 additional colleges to provide online degree courses to students. The decision has been made in order to provide a wider learning opportunity to students. The decision has been taken in link with the online education vision of the National Education Policy 2022. With the help of online degree courses, students will be able to get degrees remotely.

Institutes providing online degree

At present only a few universities are allowed to offer remote degrees in the online mode. The new order will however add 900 more autonomous colleges who are among the top 100 ranks in their respective subject category twice in the last three NIRF rankings or have a NAAC grade of a minimum of 3.26. Colleges will not need prior approval from the UGC however they will be required to follow all the regulations and guidelines issued by the UGC.

According to eligibility, students applying for online degree courses must have completed their undergraduate course and completed class 12 with desired minimum marks. The National Testing Agency will be evaluating the students through online proctored mode exams or through computer-based tests. Students will also be required to have a minimum of 75 percent attendance in the online degree programmes like any other degree programmes.

The online degree programmes will be different from the conventional degrees in many aspects apart from the mode of learning. The remote courses will make learning more flexible and will have a lot of options. The UGC is also expected to share a detailed framework for the same in March 2022.
