Minister of State for Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up 150 universities in the last three years. According to information provided by the Minister, the maximum number of universities was set up in Gujarat. A total of 19 universities were set up in the state during 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18. Singh also told the Upper House that more than 1500 colleges were also set up across the country during the same period.
"The Colleges are established by State Government/Trust/Registered Societies and Private Management, and are included under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act, 1956," read his answer.
According to the data provided by the Minister of State for HRD, Madhya Pradesh was at the second number which got 16 universities in the last 3 years. The other states which established most universities were Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan with 12, 11, and 10 universities, respectively.
Satya Pal Singh, who is famous for some of his controversial remarks, had recently expressed concern over the declining culture of reading books saying that the younger generation is relying more on internet for gathering information. Singh had earlier stoked controversy by saying hat 'mantras' had codified laws of motion before Isaac Newton.
