Anna university is a technical university located in Tamil Nadu and is been ranked 7th all over the nation. The university was established on 1 Feb 2007 by splitting into mainly six universities. There are different colleges under Anna University such as college of engineering, Alagappa College of technology, Madras institute of technology and the Anna university school of architecture and planning.

It was on September 14, 2011 that a law was passed to merge back the universities. Now Anna University has once again become a single affiliating university for engineering colleges all over Tamil Nadu.

As far as the formation of this university is concerned in the year 1978 the government of Tamil Nadu was established by Dr. V. Ramesh on 4th September 1978 through the Perarignar Anna University of technology Act, 1978. And in the year 1982 the name Anna University was adopted removing the words Perarignar and Technology.

Another significant aspect of this university is that of restructuring. In the year 2001 under the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001, Anna University became an affiliating university and had spread itself under all the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. There were mainly six government engineering colleges, three government aided private institutions and 426 self -financing colleges.

The Common Entrance Examination which is conducted by the Anna University in the name of Tamil Nadu Professional courses Entrance examination was abolished in the year 2006. Unlike other universities which conduct common entrance test, Anna University abolished it long time back. The primary reason for abolition of CET is urban students prove to be much more beneficial as compared to the rural ones. This is because as compared to the rural students, urban students are bestowed with the latest upcoming technology. This gap has resulted in substantially greater percentage of students from urban background in obtaining maximum number of seats. The left over seats are occupied by rural ones which also increase the burden of teaching staff in order to bring students on par with the urban peers.

In addition, the university’s campus is located in the southern part of Chennai and it extends over 110 acres adjoining the Adyarriver and the Raj Bhawan. There are colleges such as college of engineering, Guindy, school of architecture and planning which is a part of university. The campus primarily extends over 200.000 m2.

Thus the pattern of this university is simplified, but students are still required to work hard and score maximum marks.
