Tata institute of social sciences institute commonly known as TISS with its main campus located in Mumbai. The institute also has campuses in Hyderabad, Guhawti and Tuljapur. The institute was established in 1936 and it is the first school of social work in India. TISS previously functioned as a small institute which offered only post graduate diploma in social work but since then the institute has expanded on a huge scale in terms of educational program and infrastructure.
Over the years the institute has made significant contribution to policy, planning, action strategies and human resource development. It has done this in varied areas ranging from sustainable rural and urban development to communities such as education, health, communal harmony, human rights and industrial relations.
Tata Institute of social sciences comprises of library and research centers. The library was established along with the institute and is one of the leading libraries in the country. The library successfully meets the academic and research information needs of the students or the user community. It goes without saying that since the library specializes in the field of applied sciences, it has become the most sought after library for the social scientists in India. It also includes unique centers for knowledge which provides essential and specialized information resources to meet the growing needs of students or the user.
Though the institute primarily focuses on social work, there are other areas such as agriculture, sustainable growth and many more which come under the popular demand on the part of students. Different campuses offer various courses. For instance, TISS Tuljapur offers integrated B.A and M.A in social sciences, M.A Social work in Rural Development, M.A in development policy, planning and practices, and etc. TISS Hyderabad came into being with the approval of academic council and governing board of TISS. The program it offers are Masters in rural development, Masters in women’s studies, Masters in development studies, Masters in public policy and governance, and etc.
The institute leaves no stone unturned to provide qualitative education to its students. TISS conducts entrance examinations in order to provide admission to the candidates. It goes without saying that these examinations are not at a cake walk. Students are required to work hard and stay persistence. There are different kinds of model test papers available on various book stores and all such test papers provide a vague as to how the questions would be in the examination.
