NTA JEE Main Results 2020 – Score Calculation

The JEE Main exam for admission to Engineering and Architecture courses is held in two Phases i.e. Phase 1 in January and Phase 2 in April, which has been delayed this year and was finally held in September. In order to derive a common merit list and JEE Mains Rank List, the NTA will follow a normalization of scores process. The percentile scores for all the candidates that appear for JEE Main 2020 will be prepared using the normalization process. Let’s try and understand what is the normalization process and how JEE Main 2020 Result scores will be calculated using it.

  • As per the official notification of the NTA for JEE Main 2020, the following normalization process would be followed to compile JEE Main Result 2020.
  • Classification of candidates into four different sessions
  • Each session to have equal number of candidates
  • Session-wise JEE Main Result 2020 will be compiled in three forms i.e.
    • Raw Score
    • Percentile Score
    • Total Percentile
  • The Percentile scores for the Total Raw Score for all the four sessions (for instance, Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session2: Day-1 Shift-2, Session-3: Day-2 Shift-1 and Session-4: Day-2 Shift-2) will then be merged and will be called as NTA scores.
  • This NTA Score will be used for the compilation of result and preparation of overall Merit List / Ranking.
  • The Raw Score and the Percentile score will be calculated separately for the three subjects for each session. Check the image below.

JEE Mains Result 2020 - Raw Score

JEE Main Raw Score is basically the marks that are scored by the candidates in the examination. The marks listed as raw score in JEE Main Result 2020 are secured by the candidates as per the marking scheme of the exam as notified by the National Testing Agency / NTA. As per the JEE Main 2020 marking scheme, candidates are awarded 4 marks for each correct answer and 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. This, the final JEE Main 2020 Result raw score would be the final figure that is obtained by adding the marks awarded for all the correct answers and deducting the marks for incorrect answers from them.

JEE Mains Result 2020 - Percentile Score

In line with the other entrance exams like the CAT MBA entrance exam, this year, the JEE Main exam result will also be announced in terms of percentile. The JEE Main Percentile score will be calculated by ranking the performance of one candidate against all the others who have appeared for the examination. Simply put, the percentile score for JEE Main 2020 Result describes the comparative position of the candidate with regards to all the candidates who have appeared for the examination.

For instance, if 100 candidates appeared in the JEE Main exam and you managed to score more marks as compared to the 99 other candidates, you would secure 99 percentile.

JEE Main 2020 Result: Rank List and Merit List

NTA will follow the following process for the compilation of the JEE Main 2020 Results and JEE Main 2020 Rank or Merit list.

Step 1: Compilation of NTA Score for Phase 1 (January)

The JEE Main 2020 Phase 1 Exam was conducted in multi-sessions. Therefore, the NTA will also compile the JEE Mains Result 2020 for the Phase 1 in multiple sessions. The NTA score for each session will be compiled on the basis of Raw scores obtained by the candidates. The result will comprise the four NTA scores for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry) and the total for the first attempt.

Step 2: Compilation of NTA Score for Phase 2 (September)

Similarly, the JEE Main Result for Phase 2 i.e. the exam which was conducted in September will be compiled using the same method followed in Phase 1. The NTA score for Phase 2 will be calculated session-wise on the basis of Raw scores of the test-takers. The result will be displayed by calculating the NTA scores for all the sessions merged together.

Step 3: Preparation of JEE Main 2020 Result and JEE Main 2020 Merit List

The candidate' JEE Main 2020 result scores of Phase 1 (January Exam) and Phase 2 (September Exam) are used to prepare the final JEE Main 2020 Result and the JEE Main Merit List for 2020. For the candidates who have appeared for both, Phase 1 and Phase 2 exams, the best of the two NTA scores is considered for the preparation of the merit list.

JEE Main 2020 Result - Tie-Breaking Criteria

In case two candidates secure the equal marks in the JEE Main 2020 Paper 1 Result, the following tie-breaker formula will be applied to prepare the merit list:

  • Step 1: Candidate with higher marks in Mathematics is ranked higher in the merit
  • Step 2: For candidates who score equal marks in Mathematics, the candidate with higher marks in Physics are ranked higher in the merit
  • Step 3: For candidates who secure equal marks in Maths and Physics, the candidate with higher NTA score in Chemistry is ranked higher in the merit
  • Step 4: If the tie is still unresolved, candidate older in age is taken into consideration

Similar to the JEE Main Paper 1, for JEE Main Paper 2 Result as well, the tie-breaker formula will be as follows:

  • Step 1: Candidate scoring higher in the Aptitude Test is ranked higher in the merit list
  • Step 2: For candidates who have equal marks in the Aptitude test, the candidate with higher marks in the Drawing test is ranked higher in the merit
  • Step 3: If the tie is still unresolved, candidate older in age is taken into consideration
