The Supreme Court of India on February 16, 2018 reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water by 14.75 tmcft water per year, diverting the same to Karnataka. The court directed the Karnataka government to release 177.25 tmcft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from its inter-state Biligundlu dam, which is down from the state’s earlier allocation of 192 TMC water.

Cauvery Verdict: SC reduces Tamil Nadu’s water share, Karnataka’s increased

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court of India has increased Karnataka’s share of Cauvery water and reduced the share of Tamil Nadu by 14.75 tmcft water per year. The court stated that the decision to increase the water share of Karnataka was taken due to the 10 tmcft groundwater and 4.75 tmcft drinking water requirement for Bengaluru residents.

People not required to stand up in the movie halls to prove their patriotism, the Supreme Court of India observed and asked the Central government to consider amending the decree for regulating playing of the national anthem in the cinema halls. The Apex court also noted that "We don't have to wear patriotism on our sleeve", and that it cannot be believed that if a person does not stand up for the national anthem, then he is “less patriotic“.

Sex with minor wife amounts to rape: SC

The Apex Court of Country Supreme Court struck down the provision of criminal law that legalized sex by a spouse with his minor wife between the age of 15 to 18 years in a child marriage case. The apex court said the exception in the rape law was contrary to the philosophy of other statutes and violates the bodily integrity of a girl child. The court also ruled that the exception given to this is violative of Article 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution.
