The Madhya Pradesh government has commanded all the educational institutions in the state to hold Surya Namaskar and Pranayam sessions today, to mark the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda.
However, it was also made it clear that participation in the Surya Namaskar or sun salutations would not be mandatory.
A government press release said today that the "Surya Namaskar and Pranayam will be performed in all academic institutions from 9 a.m tomorrow."
The state-level Surya Namaskar program will be organized at the Lal Parade ground in Madhya Pradesh in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his cabinet colleagues Vijay Shah and Deepak Joshi.
All the students from schools in Bhopal would participate in the program, the release stated.
The chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, was one of the greatest spiritual leaders from India.
He was a key figure to have introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and yoga to the western world and it was his speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in 1893 in Chicago that made him popular as "Messenger of Indian wisdom to the Western world".
