Six-Plus Age Admission to Grade 1
The Education Ministry has directed all states and Union territories to implement a six-plus age requirement for Grade 1 admissions starting from the 2024-25 session.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
Central Government's Instructions
The Central Government, through the Department of School Education and Literacy, has communicated these instructions to state governments and Union Territories.
Reiteration of Directives
Reiterating directives issued since the NEP launch in 2020. Similar notices were issued last year to reinforce the commitment to this policy.
State Compliance
Earlier reports indicate that 21 states have already aligned with the Center's directive, admitting students at the age of six in Grade 1.
