Bombay - Mumbai

Bombay was renamed Mumbai in 1995, to honour ‘Goddess Mumbadevi’ and also to embrace its Marathi culture.

Madras - Chennai

In 1996 Madras officially became Chennai, inspired by the Tamil name ‘Chennapattinam’.

Calcutta - Kolkata

The name Calcutta was changed to Kolkata in 2001 to match its original Bengali pronunciation.

Bangalore - Bengaluru

Bangalore was renamed Bengaluru in 2014, a name that has been anciently used in Kannada.

Allahabad - Prayagraj

In 2018, Allahabad was changed to Prayagraj, indicating its importance as the convergence of holy rivers.

Baroda - Vadodara

Baroda became Vadodara in 1974, with its traditional Gujarati name.

Gurgaon - Gurugram

To honour Guru Dronacharya who was a revered teacher from the Mahabharata, Gurgaon was renamed Gurugram in 2016.
