Hooghly River Link
The Hooghly River spans 16.6 km, linking Howrah and Salt Lake in West Bengal.
Underwater Tunnel Facts
Using an underwater tunnel that is 26m below the river’s surface, some trains run at a depth of 16m under the riverbed.
Traffic Mitigation Initiative
To mitigate traffic congestion in Kolkata, 10.8 km will be underground and 5.75 km will be elevated.
Deepest Metro Station
Once completed, India’s deepest subway station will be the Howrah metro station on its underwater part.
Project Challenges
However, there were delays caused by tunnelling accidents but successful test runs took place in April 2023.
Commercial Operations
The entire East-West alignment (16.6 km) is set to start commercial operations by June-July.
