69th National Film Awards

On Thursday at 5:00 p.m., the 69th National Film Awards winners will be revealed. The most prestigious prizes, the National Film Prizes, are given out every year to recognise the nation's top filmmakers.

Aim of the Awards

The Awards aim to encourage the production of films of aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance, according to the Directorate of Film Festivals of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

COVID-19 Pandemic

Although the award event is held annually, the COVID-19 outbreak caused a two-year interruption. Last year, the 68th National Film Awards were held to honour the films that were released in 2020.

Films that will receive the awards

Among the many films up for grabs this year are Jai Bhim, Minnal Murali, Thalaivii, Sardar Udham, 83, Pushpa The Rise, Shershaah, The Great Indian Kitchen, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Nayattu.

1954

Originally called the ‘State Awards,’ the prizes were given out for the first time in 1954. Only the best films in various regional languages were acknowledged and given prizes at the time.

1956

After that in the year 1967, the first performers' and technicians' awards were presented for their work on the movie.

Best actress and actors

For her role in Raat Aur Din, Nargis became the first actor to win Best Actress. For his roles in Chiriyakhana and Antony Firingee in the same year, Uttam Kumar took home the Best Actor trophy.
