Do you know?
Trains run on tracks. There are different types of tracks used in different places. Each type is made for a special purpose.
Broad Gauge
This is the widest railway track, used mainly in India. It has more space between rails and is good for speed and heavy trains. It helps trains go faster and carry more weight.
Meter Gauge
This track has rails one meter apart. It is smaller than broad gauge and is used in old or less developed railway routes. It is found in small towns and hilly areas.
Narrow Gauge
Narrow gauge tracks are even smaller. These are mostly found in hilly areas or used for toy trains and mountain railways. Toy trains like those in Shimla run on this track.
Standard Gauge
Used in many other countries, this track has rails 1.435 meters apart. Metro trains in big cities also use this type. It is common in modern metros and foreign railways.
Single Line Track
In a single-line track, trains run both ways on the same line. This can slow down train movement and cause delays. Only one train can pass at a time in each direction.
Double Line Track
Here, two lines are used – one for each direction. It helps in running more trains and reduces waiting time. Trains can move faster without stopping for others.
