The official notice mentioned that you have to clear one of the exams NET, SLET, or SET for recruitment for the post of assistant professor, this will come into effect in July.
Earlier in 2018
Earlier the criteria for the assistant professor post changed in 2018 and UCG asked all the universities and colleges to make this effective for the 2021-2022 academic session.
Time
The UGC has extended the date of applicability of PHD July 2021 to July 2023 for the recruitment of assistant professors in the colleges.
Official Announcement
Prof M Jagadesh Kumar took to his Twitter handle and said that the PHD qualification will be optional from July 1, 2023.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister said that making PHD compulsory for the Assistant Professor post is not favorable at the current time.
