Uniform Civil Code bill introduced
The Uniform Civil Code bill, which the Uttarakhand government introduced in the State Assembly on February 6, will be the first of its kind to be enacted in a State following independence if it is approved.
What is a Uniform civil code bill?
The bill, which would not apply to the Scheduled Tribes, would establish a common law in Uttarakhand for all people, regardless of religion, regarding marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance.

The measure mandates that live-in relationships be registered with the state and that failing to do so within a month results in a three-month jail sentence.
Parental consent is crucial
In Uniform Civil Code, cohabiting couples must register with the district authorities, if the pair is under 21 years old, parental consent is required.
Pay fine of 25,000
The UCC Bill stipulates that if the registration is not completed within a month of the partners moving in together, they have to pay a fine of 25,000.
When live-in will not be registered?
The UCC Bill states that relationships that violate public morality, involve a married or cohabiting partner or involve a minor partner will not be recorded as live-ins.
Termination of registered live-in relationships
According to the UCC Bill, either partner or both of them may cancel their live-in relationship registration by sending a formal statement.
