Do you know?

The exosphere is the last layer of Earth’s atmosphere. It has almost no air and satellites orbit here before space begins. Tap to read in detail.

Farthest Atmospheric Layer

The exosphere is Earth’s outermost air layer, where space and atmosphere meet. It is the least dense layer of the atmosphere.

Almost Like Space

The air is so thin it blends into space, making it hard to define where the atmosphere ends. Molecules here can travel hundreds of kilometers without colliding.

Very High Up

It begins at 500 kilometers above the Earth, far beyond airplanes and weather balloons. The International Space Station orbits just below this layer.

No Oxygen

There is no air to breathe in this layer, making it impossible for humans to survive. Astronauts need space suits to move through it.

Satellites Orbit Here

Many satellites circle Earth in the exosphere, including GPS and communication satellites. Their signals help with navigation and global communication.

Extreme Temperatures

The temperature can change from very hot to very cold, depending on sunlight exposure. It can range from 1,700°C (3,092°F) in the sun to -270°C (-454°F) in the shade.
