UAPA is made with the intent of stopping activities that endanger the sovereignty, unity and security of India.
Unlawful Activities
It describes illegal activities as acts or words encouraging rebellion against state, disturbing public order or creating disharmony among different groups.
Terrorism
With this Act, terrorist acts are also covered by criminalizing them and defining terrorism which includes financing and planning to commit terrorist acts.
Banning Organisation
The government can declare organizations engaged in any such unlawful or terrorist activities as unlawful associations thereby rendering them illegal.
Stringent Penalties
Those involved in these unlawful or terrorist activities face severe punishment including long-term imprisonment along with heavy fines being imposed on them.
Preventive Detention
There have been instances where authorities have arrested and detained individuals suspected of being involved in such activities, often without bail, to avoid probable threats.
