A daughter to a versatile session musician, Mohini Dey hit the music instruction at an early age. In her early training, she emphasised discipline and practice.

She had help from other musicians who played a critical role in her development, notably Ranjit Barot and Louis Banks, who taught Dey about groove, time keeping and the art of mixing musical genres.
