Industrial Training Institutes
Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have been founded across India by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. These institutions provide training to students coming from both technical and non-technical backgrounds. Each year, millions of students enroll in nearly 15,000 ITIs, with many joining the skilled workforce.
The Industrial Training Institute was established in the 1950s, and these institutes manage India’s long-term vocational education and training (VET) system. In addition to minimising youth unemployment by providing necessary skills, education, and discipline, ITIs' main objective is to deliver skilled people to the public and private sectors.
ITIs offer vocational training through one- or two-year skill-based programs under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS). These courses follow a semester-based system and cover a wide range of industries, preparing students for lifelong careers. The training focuses on equipping students with fundamental skills and knowledge to help them secure employment as semi-skilled or skilled workers or pursue self-employment.
