Visvesvaraya Technological University acknowledges Post-Placement Company Training as an Internship

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has officially recognised post-placement company training as an internship. This decision allows students to count their company training as part of their academic requirements. The move provides students with more valuable hands-on experience. It also aligns with VTU’s focus on enhancing practical learning opportunities for students.

According to a university circular, students who receive job offers and are required to undergo company training may consider it as an internship. To be eligible, students must have a job offer, an invitation for training from the company, and have completed their seventh semester.

The training should last a minimum of 15 weeks (approximately 90 days) and include regular reporting and evaluation. This requirement is in line with VTU’s new 15-week mandatory internship policy for the 2021 batch. Additionally, according to university guidelines, if students are unable to secure an internship, they may opt for skill-enhancement courses, provided the credits earned are equivalent to those of the internship. Only 500 students have chosen this alternative pathway.

Approximately half of the final-year university students completed their internships in the seventh semester, while the remaining half is expected to do so in the upcoming semester. The internship situation looks promising, as a significant number of students have successfully secured internships," said VTU special officer S Halbhavi.

Internships abroad or in other states are also an option

According to Anvith Katil, the VTU representative for the National Students Union of India, colleges are now collaborating with the National Skill Development Corporation to facilitate internships. These internships are more demanding and provide students with more substantial, real-world experience compared to the previous one-month programs.

Approximately 40% of our student body successfully completed internships during their seventh semester," stated the principal of an engineering college in Bengaluru. "Securing internships can be particularly challenging for institutions located in rural areas. While we can effectively assist students in finding placements during their initial year, the real challenge lies in sustaining this momentum and facilitating continued internship opportunities throughout their academic journey.

Students are also allowed to pursue internships outside the state or abroad, subject to the college's approval.
