The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has become the first IIT to set up Standards Clubs in 14 departments in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This groundbreaking initiative seeks to promote a culture of quality, safety, and standardisation in engineering and technology education.

The departments involved are:
- Civil Engineering
- Hydrology
- Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
- Earthquake Engineering
- Earth Sciences
- Electrical Engineering
- Metallurgical & Materials Engineering
- Water Resources Development and Management
- Design
- Chemical Engineering
- Polymer and Process Engineering
- Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED)
- Computer Science and Engineering
These departments will collaborate across disciplines to advance standardisation in various fields. On December 10, 2024, BIS officials visited IIT Roorkee to officially engage with students and mentors, sharing important insights on the role of standardisation in research, academia, and industry. The clubs will arrange workshops, technical sessions, and practical projects, enabling students to actively contribute to the field of standardisation.
Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, praised the initiative, saying, "As the first IIT to establish Standards Clubs across 14 departments, IIT Roorkee demonstrates its dedication to excellence in education and research. This initiative will not only provide students with industry-relevant skills but also enhance India's role in global standardisation efforts."
Prof. Deepak Khare, BIS Chair Professor and Professor (HAG) in the Department of Water Resources Development & Management at IIT Roorkee, emphasised the institute's dedication to advancing standardisation, saying, "IIT Roorkee's proactive approach to standardisation sets a benchmark for academic institutions. By involving students from various disciplines, we are promoting a holistic understanding of standards as a driver for innovation, quality improvement, and economic growth."
Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of BIS, also commended this groundbreaking initiative, stating, "IIT Roorkee's progressive approach to standardisation sets a high benchmark for academic institutions. BIS is establishing Standards Clubs in academic institutions and schools to raise awareness among young people about the importance of standards in improving quality of life. By engaging students from various disciplines, this initiative promotes a holistic understanding of standards as a catalyst for innovation, quality enhancement, and economic growth."
The 14 Standards Clubs will be officially inaugurated by Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of BIS, on February 27, 2025. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in IIT Roorkee's mission to advance higher education by integrating quality assurance and standardisation, ultimately shaping the next generation of leaders in engineering, technology, and policy-making.
