JIPMER Updates PhD Guidelines: Check Changes in Exemption and Eligibility Criteria

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) traces its roots to the ‘École de Médecine de Pondichéry,’ founded by the French government in 1823. A new medical college was established in 1956, and the hospital was opened in 1964. In 2008, JIPMER was recognised as an institution of national importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is one of the few institutions in the country that offers education from undergraduate to super-speciality levels, conducts advanced research, and provides high-quality speciality healthcare. JIPMER stands out for offering free speciality healthcare while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

JIPMER has notified about changes to the revised PhD guidelines of 2020. These amendments, which are applicable immediately, were made to the exemption and eligibility criteria based on requests from JIPMER faculty.

Entrance Exam Exemption for In-Service Candidates

The Amendment No.1 of the newly amended, based on the request from the JIPMER faculty, with other terms and conditions remaining the same, states the following:-

  • In-service candidates applying for part-time PhD programs are exempted from the entrance exam to promote faculty involvement in research.
  • Non-faculty staff must clear the entrance exam in their respective fields.

PhD Guide Eligibility Criteria

Amendment No.2 of the newly amended, based on the request from the JIPMER faculty, states with other terms and conditions remaining the same, states the following:-

  • According to the revised 2020 PhD guidelines, a guide must have a PhD or postgraduate qualification with at least three years of postdoctoral teaching or research experience as an Associate Professor at JIPMER. 
  • As per UGC guidelines, faculty members with a PhD degree and a minimum of five years of postdoctoral teaching or research experience as an Assistant Professor are also eligible to guide PhD scholars.
  • To encourage more PhD admissions, JIPMER will expand the pool of eligible guides based on this criterion.
  • The 2020 PhD guidelines require a guide to have at least five original research publications, with at least three published in the last 3 years.
  • Assistant Professors with a PhD must have at least three research publications in peer-reviewed or refereed journals to qualify as a guide.
  • JIPMER will follow this UGC standard.
